Brooke's SOHH Chapter 5 Summary

Brooke's SOHH Chapter 5 Summary
Many people have the assumption that you need strict obedience to the rules. While rules are good they also have to be balanced with passion and tenderness. If  rules are the only thing a child gets with music they will have no motivation/ignition to keep going with the instrument. We see through Deanne's story how detrimental it is to find a teacher that will take the time to find the way the child learns and go from there.

Key Concepts- "ways of learning are as varied as the shapes of noses"

Key Terms- Learning disabled

Connection- I was like Deanne in the aspect that I started with a piano teacher who would yell negative and discouraging thing at me if I got something wrong. It made me really not want to practice and I really dreaded those early morning lessons. But unlike Deanne I switched to a different teacher who was the exact opposite. She would find out the way I learned and would then begin to teach me. It made a huge difference in how much I learned and I was much more willing to stay with the piano and to practice it every day.
