Summary: When a student's learning style is not properly matched up with a teacher's teaching style, a disastrous learning environment can ensue. A student that does not learn a certain way is usually labeled (by parents, teachers, and themselves) as dumb or "learning disabled." In reality, many of these students are very bright, but require a different style of teaching to succeed. This lack of learning success has nothing to do with a lack of effort or desire on the parent, teacher, or student's part; just a mismatching of styles. Let's stop saying what children should be, and start noticing what they are, and working with it!
Key Concepts: Every child has a unique learning style, and each needs a teacher that matches that style.
Key Terms: none...
Making Connections: I notice that sometimes I am an awful teacher to my own voice. I keep telling myself what I should be, how I should be practicing, what I should enjoy in the practice, and it often doesn't gel. "What may pass for laziness or perverseness may be a valid reaction to unintentional bruising." I would like to start catering my own practicing to my own learning style better. I also need to be careful that once I find my learning style, that I don't assume all my students will learn the same way I do.
