Amber's (late) master class input form 9/24
Emily Floyd has some crazy awesome rich color happening in her lower range. Tom got her to carry this sound up into her higher notes and helped her to get more focus in her sound by having her be more aware of the vowels. Speaking the text, then singing it with the same feel was also startlingly effective.
Sarah Boucher was bright, light, sweet and especially resonant in her upper range (notes). Her pout for the subject matter was adorable! She seemed to be gasping for breath just a bit though.
The solution for her was to breathe in rhythm in advance enough of the starting note to provide needed energy. The sound was much better supported after doing this. She was also encouraged to speak the phrase in rhythm, then sing. Her voice was much more resonant and consistent in sound through the high to low notes after doing this.
Sarah Low was quite a fun surprise. her voice was fluty, agile, and resonant. It was also amazingly consistent and mature for such a young singer doing melissma (runs) in this Purcell piece.
Tom's remarks were to the effect that he thought she had great breath longevity, but that she could improve it even more by focusing the voice.
The most important question for the day however was, "Are you having fun?"
A point we all miss a lot I think. Have fun, and show it.
