Ben Shaw lesson summary 09/27/2013

Lesson with Laurie Hart.
For this lesson, after we talked for a minute about how amazing our guest artist's performance was, we started by taking care of the song analysis forms. I turned three of them in, and we agreed that I would turn in another one next week. Then, we did some vocal exercises. We spent roughly five minutes working in the head voice, then did a minute of low voice for balance. We discussed methods for relaxing, in particular, we discussed shoulder tension and how to relieve it. With more vocal exercises we did, we practiced making ugly, relaxed noises to help release the sound. To finish the lesson, we practiced a couple of songs: "Zueignung" and "Nocturne." With the first song, we worked on expression and creating a more detailed image of what I was singing about, refering to the song analysis form. I sang the last half of the song with more expression the second time through. After that, we moved to the second song. With this, we worked on the last few measures of the piece, working to acheive a more consistent sound while singing quietly. When I tried it a second time, things improved, and I was able to accomplish a better sound.
