Chapter summary: This chapter was, to put it in my own words, about focusing on music on a macro level. Ristad begins the chapter by describing her experiences with hiking. Rather than looking at the trail immediately in front of her as most of us do, the author describes the sensations of looking up and letting her body manage itself, looking down only occasionally. As this applies to music, the author describes teaching students based on this model; macro management. Her suggestions and ideas are less applicable to us as vocalists than to pianists, but the principle remains; don't micromanage.
Key concepts: don't micromanage. Let the finer parts of your brain/body work out the details.
Key terms: none.
Making connections: In my personal practice, I certainly would do well to work more on a macro level.
