The first thing I noticed was that she has a Huge Mouth! She was open on every vowel from what i could see. Is there such a thing as opening too much? She is definitely pushing that line in my opinion. There were not a whole lot visual changes for each vowel, so the changes were definitely happening on the inside. It wasn't a dramatic change, but I think her [i] vowels closed a tiny bit. her lips were very rounded and took no particular shape. It didn't make a difference whether she was singing high or low, mouth opening was basically the same. It was a little darker sound, so she had to be doing something with her tongue? her mouth was open for days so it's definitely an inside change
Simon Keenlyside:
There was a noticeable difference in vowel shape from the darker vowels to the brighter vowels. He still sounded great. I feel like his lips spread on the brighter vowels like [i] and [e]. There was a lot of energy in his performance, like dramatic shaping in his lips. For his higher notes he definitely created more space in his mouth but his lips were very well rounded. The definitive vowel shaping happened a lot more in the lower register. I'm assuming this is because it's lower and needs to be clearly dictated.
His mouth was open, but i felt like there was some pull downwards. This happened particularly on the [e] vowels towards the beginning of the piece. Up in his upper register the vowels became less defined. It sounded great, but from a visual perspective I couldn't identify really what vowel he was singing. During the more energetic portions of the piece his most became more active and you could see him shaping more. There seemed to be a correlation of more mouth opening for higher/louder notes, and not so much opening for softer/lower notes.
I don't feel like I could identify any method to her madness, as far as vowel shaping went. It was kind of all over the place. Lips were spread a lot in the lower range. There just seemed to be a lot happening in her face. Maybe she always uses a lot of expression to be seen at the back of an opera house or something. it just felt excessive. Her mouth seemed to naturally open more for her higher notes. it didn't sound horrible at all. Maybe she has a weird shaped mouth. I couldn't figure out how she was doing it. It was clear however that it was all meant to be super expressive.
