Amber's voice lesson with student A 2-7-2014

Amber - Lesson with Student A (Mandy)…... 2-7-2014

We had not met the previous week because her ...erm... cycle.... was not in an appropriate time. We stretched a bit. Then, we vocalized with some onset exercises (mimemamomu), on pitch and: m, n, ng, ah..down a five note scale.
We then turned to the song she had been working on. Aside form a few of the notes being sketchy, she did fairly well. We stopped at a place or two where the melody crossed over the ranges and did some siren type exercises to encourage the unifying of the ranges.
I explained how those ranges will always be there and that there will always be a gap, but that we can close the gaps over time with gentle work.
We then turned to the breathiness that turned up in the higher notes of her piece. We tried some of the siren, and “wow!” surprise tones and worked then on down. However I wanted to double check with Cindy before going too far as this student had a past history of vocal damage to make sure I was approaching this challenge the right way.
We then had a heart to heart about practicing and how to help make it a more easy thing to work into her day. There are some emotional hangups that we have in common with singing at our best and we discussed them as well.
