Taylee Beckstead 02/07/14 Lesson

Vocalizes:

-Descending octave lip trills.

-Descending octave on <thee>. We've done this one before, but we tried adding a new spin to it. Instead of just going right into it and then moving right into the next key, instead she wanted me to really think about all the components ("pitch comes to you", low larynx, internal space, etc.) and not make any sound until I felt ready. This didn't really work this time around unfortunately. But I was also thinking so much about my jaw that I think I was creating tension. So instead we went back to the regular pace of just going right into them.

I was trying so hard to make (hmm that word sounds dangerous) my jaw be in the right place that I was creating a ton of tension!

-Descending <lee lay lah loh> on 5-3-4-2-3-1-2-7-1.

-Descending <lee lay lah loh> on 8-6-7-5-6-4-5-3-4-2-3-1-2-7-1.

-Descending <the> on 8-5-3-1. I was really tensing my lips a lot in this exercise for some reason. I also forgot to mention that when ever Brianna plays this scale on the piano, she always plays the 9th^ as well so that I can hear a pitch above the one I'm going to sing so that I can think higher and then fall into the correct pitch.

-[i] on 1-1-2-3-3-4-5-3-1. On this one I was to focus on staying light and buoyant! WOW, my vowels are so so SO bright!! I didn't really notice it until I heard Brianna demonstrate the exercise in my recording and then me do the exercise immediately after!! Chalk that one up to experience...

-[i]-5-4-3-2-1-2-3-4-[e]-5-4-3-2-1-2-3-4-[a]-5-4-3-2-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. This one really helped me in that I had to find the looseness in my lower body to do it correctly. This one was really helpful to practice my melizmas for the opera. I tend to pull my tongue back a lot on the the [a], especially on the ascending part. Also I was trying to control each note and that sounded worse then when I let go.... duh. Also when I stood up I was a lot more released.

Songs worked on:

-Well once again, we worked on my Aria. I felt a lot better about it this week though. I know that when I allow emotion to come into my singing, it ALWAYS feels and sounds better. That was able to happen this week because I think I finally know my music well enough that I'm not using it as a crutch.

Take aways:

-I kinda mentioned my take away already. I know my singing is better with thought and emotion behind it, so I really need to get memorized and spend some time thinking about the text that's in between the lines.

-I also need to spend some time in front of a mirror to see all the weird faces that she always mentions.

Goals:

-I'd really like to get my accompanist to start coming.... it will help both Brianna and I to focus.

-Memory work!!
