Sarah Boucher McCoy Ch.3

Sarah Boucher McCoy Ch. 3

a) What are the two fundamental types of resonance that occur in the human body? Forced resonance (conductive resonance) and Free resonance (sympathetic resonance). Forced resonance is when there is a mechanical connection between the vibrator and the resonator. Free resonance is when the air molecules and reflections of sound waves within a void.
b) Why are the chest and head not good resonators for the projection of sound? The chest and head are not good resonators because they don't make the  voice louder or alter the timbre of the voice, they are only felt by the singer and they have no effect on the listener.
c) What are the four traits common to all musical instruments including the voice? Power source, vibrator, resonator and articulator
d) Why is the vocal tract considered to be a quarter-wave resonator? The vocal tract is considered to be a quarter resonator because the resonance first occurs when the physical length of the resonator equals one quarter.
e) What is the relationship between the harmonic series and the resonance series of a quarer-wave system? The resonance series is made up of only odd number multiples.
f) Define musical resonance. "The intensification and enriching of a musical tone by supplementary vibration."
g) What anatomical structures function as free resonators in the human voice? The trachea, larynx and the vocal tract.
