Listening assignment
Renee Fleming: Renee was absolutely beautiful in this video. I feel like she had the perfect blend of chiaroscuro in her voice. It seemed like it was effortless for her. If you took the audio away you wouldn't be able to tell when she was singing high notes and regular chest notes. Beautiful.
Maria callas: ok here's the deal with Maria. I normally don't like listening to her, but she was beautiful in this video. Her technique seemed flawless, and it seemed like it was ridiculously easy for her to sing this entire aria. It's not my favorite voice, but that is just the way she was built, to produce that sound. The technique was perfect, and the notes were light, crisp, resonant, and the space was there as well.
Barbara frittoli. She is a very close 3rd to Maria. I was very fond of Barbara's voice. I loved the rich dark timbre in her voice, but it sounded light and easy at the same time. She did have some weird head/jaw movements but they didn't fetch her sound at all.
Anna netrebko. I really enjoyed her rich open sound, I could tell that the space in her mouth was huge, and physically she didn't have to move her mouth a lot because the technique was there.
Sumi jo: I found her voice very lovely. It was more of a brighter voice with a little less space and richness, but overall it was very pretty and I liked it a lot. She was very accurate with the fioratura and it was light and sweet. Obviously i can't comment on what I saw because it was an audio recording.
Joan southerland: I wasn't very fond of Joan at all here. It sounded like she was trying to be too nasal and it ended up sounding honky. Physically she's looked sort of stiff, but I overall her posture was good. I just didn't enjoy the sound she was producing.
Edita gruberova: at the beginning I thought she was doing well and it sounded very nice. But when it got to the higher phrases she really struggled. She didn't maintain her big space through the top like she had in her middle register. Also she looked like she had to contort her face to maintain the nasality she wanted, is my guess. Overall, not my favorite.
