Summary: The greatest obstacles teacher's face is in communicating what they want to their students. Everyone interprets the sensations of proper singing differently, and so what description works for one student will not work for another. Similarly, student's at opposite ends of the spectrum, say one who pushes their larynx down and one who's larynx rides up, will receive contradictory instructions from their teacher. Overcoming the obstacle of language is very difficult. This is why it is necessary for the teacher to have a broad understanding of singing enabling them to serve as many students as possible. A teacher needs a sensitive ear so that they can perceive what is going on with the students. A teacher need not be a professional soloist, but they need to have mastered their own voice and be able to model for their students. Know your students musical background, and also know about their life. We have already discussed how much emotion can influence the voice, so it is beneficial to know the student's history. Use positive language with students. If you love teaching, you will find it a rewarding experience and so will your students.
Key Concepts: Every student is different and need to be taught differently. The teacher needs to be sensitive aurally and emotionally. The teacher needs to have mastered their own voice. Know your student. If you don't love teaching, don't do it.
Making Connections: I love this chapter. So much good stuff here for those of us who plan on teaching. I love Oren Brown. He sounds like such a sensitive and gentle teacher.
