Chapter 14 Summary
Oren Brown:
Summary: CHORAL
SINGING! Yes. There has been a theme this semester that has shown up a couple
of different times. ALL of my life I thought of solo singing (in the classical
style) and good choral singing as being two completely different and opposite
things. But this semester has shown me that that is really not very true. There
are so many things that are similar, and I think that I will be forever changed
as a conductor because of this semester. I feel that singing with freedom and
good technique is now essential to ANY singing, and therefore a must for choral
singers. I can't wait to try out a few of the exercises that he has mentioned.
I believe VERY strongly in listening to the voices around you for blend and
intonation, but I can understand the merit in singing with your ears plugged-
learning to naturally trust what is happening on the inside. I feel a good
singer will do both. I very much enjoyed this chapter.
Key Concept: Good
singing is good singing. PERIOD. Similar steps should be taken with a choir to
ensure that good, free, and healthy vocal production is happening.
Making Connections:
This is incredibly relevant to myself and the goals I have for my career.
Already I have been more focused than I ever have on not only practicing free,
healthy singing in choir, but teaching that to others whether it be in a church
choir, or as I have any opportunity to conduct or talk about good choral
singing. I am excited for the prospects of understanding and teaching these
things to students.
