Chapter 12 Summary
Oren Brown:
This chapter focuses
on all of the non "technical" aspects of a performance. When a singer
actually stands in front of an audience something special needs to happen. A
singer can work, work, work, on technique, but when they get in front of an audience
they need to be able to communicate emotion and feeling. These are elements
that need to be practiced just like vocal technique. A lot of stories were
shared about amazing singers who spend hours and weeks in preparation just on
the words and emotion of the piece. This is so important. Oren Brown also
talked about the need to develop recitals that are pleasing to audiences. We
live in a world where people really look to be entertained and we need to be
able to provide that to an audience. Special care should be taken to ensure
that audiences understand, and feel connected to the recital. Maybe that means
acting out a certain part of an aria, or bringing a small prop or dress item.
Maybe it means singing more things in English. Whatever you have to do to make
the audience feel connected to a recital.
Key Concept: Make
sure you spend ample time working on interpretation, and understanding the
emotion of the text.
Key Terms:
Making Connections:
Something that I feel like I have improved at over this semester is creating
that emotional connection. I still have a lot more work to do however. I need
to spend more time thinking and trying to identify emotions and then work on sending
those emotions to the audience.
