Chapter 11 Summary
Oren Brown:
Summary: This
chapter focused on importance of practice. I love all of the hints and tips
that this chapter gives for practicing. It really is a lot of what Cindy has told us to do all
along. I love the concept that talks about the purpose of Vocalizing-
Vocalizing exists to help us focus and improve on one element music. We can use
the concept of vocalizing in our repertoire. He recommends complete and
thoughtful study of different elements, and then slowly putting them together.
Oren also discusses the power of visualization and mental preparation. I liked
the comment that he made, that a lot of artists never even sing a song until it
has all been memorized. I like this. The last thing I really liked: on page 118.
I put a dog ear on that page, and I really think I will keep it there. It is a
great diagram to be able to visualize a lot of the elements of good singing. I
think I can go back to this often as I teach and sing.
Key Concept:
Practicing everyday is important. There are so many tools we can use to
practice in an efficient manner. All of these things are necessary to have a
long and healthy career.
Key Terms:?
Making Connections:
I want to try the idea of learning a song completely before even trying to sing
it. I like the idea of creating a mental image of what you want, and then your
body working to create that image. I want to try this next semester at least
for one song.
