Chapter 21 Summary-Teaching singing is very difficult. Explaining the principles behind healthy singing in a way that allows the student to understand them can be very challenging. We must also take into account that each student is unique and this will cause methods that work for some to be ineffective for others. We don't need to be the best singer in the world to be an effective voice teacher, but we do need to have a deep enough understanding of our own voice to be able to demonstrate proper behavior to our students. We also need a complete knowledge of the physiological side of singing so that we can understand what needs to happen for our students to sing properly. It is also essential that we are familiar with the musical and personal background of our students. This can help us understand what their goals are and what our expectations should be. Our expectations for our students obviously needs to change based on the needs and ability level of each individual student. Just as with singing itself, our love for teaching others to sing should be what motivates us when instructing our students.
Key Concept-Teaching singing is hard and requires a deep understanding of our own voice and of good vocal technique. A deep level of perception and analysis is also required for effective vocal teaching

Making Connections-Reading all of these books and doing all of the other things required for this class has made me realize just how difficult it is to teach singing. It has, however, also made me love it more. Practice for me now is less of a guessing game and more of a challenging quest for improvement.
