Sam Meredith OB Ch. 19 Summary

Sam
Chapter 19 Summary-It is important to note that there are many factors that affect singing that aren't purely physical. Emotional factors can also affect our singing. When we go through a traumatic emotional experience, that can often have an adverse effect on our singing. When we have such an experience we need to either fix the problem, wait for the right time to fix it, or just learn to adapt to our circumstances as best as we can. Having consistent control over our emotions is an important skill for us as singers. We are always going to be expected to convey a wide range of sometimes intense emotions when we perform, but we are only to make the audience think we are experiencing those emotions rather than actual experience them. If we let the emotion of the music overtake us it can often have a bad effect on the quality of our singing. Good control of emotion can also be helpful in responding to criticism. There will be times in every career when a singer will receive a bad performance review either from themselves or someone else. In order to maintain mental stability and healthy, consistent singing habits the singer must learn to maintain confidence in such cases.
Key Concept-Emotional stress can have an affect on singing just as much as physical stress can.
Key Terms-Emotion, Stress
Making Connections-I have never really thought about this principle. I don't think I have ever had any huge problems with my emotions affecting the quality of my singing, but I will definitely be aware of that possibility from now on.
