Chapter 18 Summary-Good hearing is obviously key for good singing and understanding the science behind hearing is important as well. We must understand that our own ears can in many cases be misleading. For example, our ears have a natural mechanism that muffles the louder sounds we create. Some may just think that they aren't singing loud enough when really this mechanism is at work. It is also true that higher notes have a greater natural intensity than lower notes. We may think because of the way we hear ourselves that we need to add more intensity to our high notes, but this is not the case. Every singer must strive to maintain the health of his/her hearing. Listening to intense sounds for a long period of time can desensitize our ear muscles and can, in some cases, lead to partial or complete loss of hearing. Some singers have hearing disabilities that make it more difficult for them to match pitch and sing well. Many of these disorders, however, can be corrected.
Key Concept-We hear ourselves differently than other people hear us. In most cases when we think we need to sing louder that is not the case.
Key Terms-Diplacusis, Tensor Tympani
Making Connections-This is interesting information because I often feel like my high notes aren't loud enough, although they do seem easier and more free in those cases where I don't feel like they are very loud.
