Jaron Putnam Oren Brown Summary Chapter 6

Jaron Putnam Oren Brown Summary Chapter 6

Chapter 6 Summary Oren Brown:

Summary: This chapter focuses on two areas: voice classification and working with children's voices. Oren Brown talks about the danger of "classifying" a voice. The biggest problem with classifying a voice is that it can close the mind of the singer to other possibilities that might be more natural for that particular voice. It is important to study voice with someone (or to be the kind of teacher) that recognizes and encourages good healthy singing so that the full range, color, technique of the voice can be discovered. The other area he talked about involved working with children's voices. It seemed like the basic rule of thumb was that you should not push children's voices to be more than what they can be. Young voices will sound thin and not mature, and that is how it should be for.

Key Concept: I've wanted to try and define my voice… Mostly because I feel like I fit in a weird awkward in between place… But I know now that I shouldn't question that. I need to just keep vocalizing and let my voice develop in a natural way.

Key Terms: tessitura, spinto, lyric, coloratura, dramatic, bass-baritone, heldentenor.

Making Connections: I was most interested in this chapter by the section on Monotone. I have had people come up to me and ask me what they can do to be a better singer. I've tried to match pitch with them before, but I like the idea of swapping what happens. Where they speak on pitch, and then we match that to a piano.
