Chapter summary: This chapter is about the primal sound. It has the ring of the concept of "authenticity" in that it is about discovering one's "true" (dare I say "naked?") sound. This sound is different for everybody because everyone has a unique throat. Because this is different for everyone, imitation is dangerous; we shouldn't try to sound exactly like anyone else. Brown also talks in this chapter about the relationship between the voice and the mind. The vocal folds, he says, will adjust just by thinking the pitch. Hence the need to "have faith in God." Brown also includes specific vocal exercises for finding one's primal sound.
Key points: we must rediscover our voice we weren't ashamed to express at birth; our primal sound. This is the key to our unique artistic expression.
Key terms: primal sound
Making connections: Everything about singing, it seems, involves jumping off a cliff. The only difference is that the ground at the bottom is soft, and so one will not become hurt. We jump off a cliff in producing sound, but also in artistic expression, which is what I struggle with the most. Sharing one's authentic self with a group of people is hard. I just need to jump.
