OB chapter 18
Want to receive noises tones and other stimuli? That try hearing! This awesome sense will help you in discerning all of those lovely frequencies and their intensities mentioned in Chapter 15.
A brief disclaimer on our product: You will not hear yourself as others hear you. This is a result of our handy dandy fail safe tensor tympani. this little miracle will block out all of those too loud sounds of you own voice so that you don't go deaf
Seriously though, the ears actually have muscles and they can get tired. Auditory fatigue can result in overexposure to loud sounds such as those found lurking in dark movie houses, construction sites, heavy metal concerts, and currently in my back yard full of kids.
An odd disability that comes up is diplacusis. This happens when each ear retains a different pitch memory for the same sound. aha! I guess I have heard the beat phenomenon. this is absent in those who have this affliction.
Above all, protect your hearing. Get hearing tests regularly and don;t be stupid. Wear earplugs at loud events and when working with noisy equipment.
Key concepts: Hearing a sound is just as important as creating a sound.
Key words: Decibel, frequency, tensor tympani
connection: I had NO idea that the ears had muscles. My kid brother has apparent diplacusis. I did not know there was a cure. This gives me hope for him.
