Sarah Brenay
Sarah performed a lovely duet this afternoon in Voice Recital Hour. She sang her notes clearly and had a relaxed presence that eased her listeners. One thing that she could work on is her use of proper breath management, as throughout the piece she tended to take a few high breaths. This was shown by her chest expanding instead of her breaths beginning in her lower abdomen. The affect on her singing lead to a possibly less full sound than if she had taken continual lower breaths. It also would aid in her higher notes if she took a more full, low breath and used more air. Sarah's intonation was great, and she had a very glassy, mature and sophisticated timbre to her voice particularly in her lower range. Sarah's diction was clear when she was announcing herself and throughout her singing. Her expressiveness throughout the song was well done as she portrayed the meaning well through her focus and gestures. During the section when her duet partner was singing, however, she did lose some of her connection to the song. Staying in the moment and playing the part even when the other individual is singing would greatly add to this piece. Overall, the performance was delightful with its tender atmosphere and Sarah's clear tone.
Sarah Boucher
Sarah Boucher gave a very fun performance. She had some high breathing, instead low breaths which could be worked on to add some volume and fullness to her singing. She was very on pitch and had a jazzy, bright timbre to her voice. Her diction was clear, except for one or two moments when her Ds sounded slightly light Ts. Sarah's expressiveness was excellent. She didn't just sing the piece, she performed it. She had great use of her face and gestures to portray the message. I loved this song because of her acting especially and she had a nice finish.
Taylee Beckstead
Taylee sang an interesting piece that she sang and expressed well. She had proper breathing technique throughout, shown through her low breaths, and it added to her clear tone and volume. She was in tune and had a clear and bright timbre to her voice. There may have been some throat tension she could work to release as her neck seemed tense while singing. Her diction was clear, and she expressed the song well. Her facial expressions were quite engaging and she added movement to liven the performance. One note for her movements is that she does not need to rush through them. She tended to make a gesture and then quickly move to the next. It would be beneficial to her to sustain the gesture for a moment before continuing on to another gesture. Also, it is hard to sing when accompanied by someone who has never seen the piece beforehand but Taylee could work to seem less distracted by the awkwardness of the rough accompaniment moments.
Carolee Beck
Carolee gave a lively, jazzy performance of "Feelin' Good". She had some high breathing shown from her chest expanding instead of her lower abdomen and more continual lower breaths could add to her volume. She had impressively good intonation for all of the quick riffs throughout. Her voice had a very bright and vibrant timbre that created a unique jazziness in it and she also had clear diction throughout. Carolee could work to express the song more in her face and actions, but the expression in her voice was very well done. The overall performance effectively created a relaxed jazzy feel.
Emily Cottam
Emily sang a beautiful classical song at voice recital hour. A few moments throughout there were signs of high breaths when her chest expanded instead of her lower abdomen. Working to take more low breaths could aid in her volume and create a fuller sound. She could find benefit in using more air on her higher notes to create an even fuller sound as well. Emily had clear intonation and had a silvery and silken timbre to her voice. She practiced good diction throughout her introduction and song. She had good facial expressions, but could work to push her expressiveness even farther to enhance the performance of the song. Emily had a tendency to to sway side to side and fiddle with her fingers often while singing. These are most likely unconscious habits that can be resolved by being more aware of when they are occurring. The overall performance was effective through her silvery tone and great intonation.
Caitlin Craig
Caitlin Craig created a nice relaxed atmosphere with her piece in voice recital hour. Her tone was clear, but the overall sound was somewhat faint. Her breathing could aid in adding volume and vibrance to the piece with more air flow throughout. Her intonation was briefly unclear at times but a stronger, more continual air flow could aid in this area as well. Her voice had a smooth timbre to it. Her diction was clear but the overall sound and volume seemed held back; she could open her mouth more to let the sound come forward. Caitlin had a calm sense about her while singing that expressed a relaxed feeling. She could work to express the deeper message of the song more through her face and body and to not sway back and forth, as she tended to do this sometimes throughout the song. Her overall performance was a nice sound, but could be improved upon by adding more volume and expressiveness to her voice.
Laura Berg
Laura Berg used some nice breathing techniques in her performance at voice recital hour today. A few of her low breaths seemed to not fill up quite as much as they could and felt rushed at parts, but generally her low breaths enriched the volume and tone of her voice. She was very in tune and had excellent higher notes in particular. She had a fluttering, glassy timbre to her voice. Laura could work on adding more richness to her lower notes with more air and volume. She could also work to make her diction more clear throughout the song. Laura's expressiveness was good, but I feel she could push that expressiveness even further. Laura's volume tended to fade away at the end of some of her phrases until the sounds and words were unclear, so it would be beneficial to her to keep the volume strong and carry out the end of all phrases. Overall, Laura sang well, notably through her use of good breathing techniques and strong higher notes.
