Chapter Two Summary

The Deep Practice Cell

Chapter Summary:

Myelin creates talent and skill. Any action is dictated by a series of circuit boards throughout our bodies. Myelin wraps around these circuits as a skill is repeated through deep practice. Myelin makes the circuits react faster and more efficiently, transforming practice into a talent. Everyone has the ability to cultivate myelin and to become an expert in any skill, this can be accomplished through deep practice.

Key Concepts:

Skills are developed through the wrapping of myelin around our neural circuits.

Once we develop a skill, it becomes automatic.

Everyone has myelin and it does not unwrap once it is wrapped.

Deep practice and struggling are essential to the growth of myelin.

Key Terms:
myelin
automaticity

Making Connections:

This chapter blew my mind! How often do I blame my lack of talent on the fact that I wasn't "born with it".  Well now I can't use that excuse. It motivates me to practice deeply being conscious that the right practice habits are what makes me a better singer.

I want to instruct my students someday about myelin, I think this principle demonstrates how to adequately learn a skill and develop a talent. Knowing about it will help them to more effectively practice.
