Sam Meredith Listening Assignment #5

Pressed Voice Quality: Shirley Bassey--Goldfinger
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBPVe5EpnE0
Things I would do to lighten up her voice:

  • Descending exercises that start in a more head voice quality and delay the transition to full voice
  • Exercises that use more open vowels to fight against her tendency to press on closed vowels
  • Although I don't have any video evidence to prove it, I think she has a lot of jaw tension, in this recording. So, I would also incorporate some sort of gentle jaw movement during vocalization and performance of songs in a lesson or practice room setting.
Breathy Voice Quality: Jack Johnson--Sitting, Waiting, Wishing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ffgsf3pqaD8
Things I would do to help his voice:

  • Exercises that use emotionally charged words such as "yikes"
  • Exercises that use more front vowels such as [i] or [e]
  • From the recording it sounds a little like he is starting to run out of breath at the end of phrases. I would do some posture correction with him as well focusing mostly on helping him maintain a more open chest cavity.
