Emily F. listening #5

Emily F. listening #5

There are some nice things about this young lady's voice, but when she sings the high notes she tends to scoop up and press. I would encourage her to 1- work on A-O joint. She tends to tilt her chin upward, adding to the strain in singing. This also is either a cause or a result of her rolled in shoulders. 2- I would like her to try to have more balance in her lower body so that she has the benefits of getting lower breaths. She shifts her weight back and forth, and moves around and I think this prevents her from having released abs. 3- I would encourage more spontaneous combustion, particularly on the ascending leaps. I want to hear the spin and ring and vibrato immediately upon reaching those notes. It makes me think she is reaching for the pitch and pushing rather than accessing the resonant space and letting the air do the work.

I'm sure breathy was the sound she was going for, as she seems to have a distinct style and a large following. 1- Her arms were awkwardly held back for the whole piece. This probably keeps her chest up, but creates excess back tension and therefore rigidity through her spine, making breathing harder, probably. So I'd work on her posture. 2- The almost constant tension in her jaw would make it hard to have a released resonant space, so I'd ask her to do some side-to-side jaw movement, "dumb" jaw exercises. 3-I would encourage taller, purer vowels, again so that she has more resonant space.
