Sam Meredith VRH 9/19

Luke Shepherd-The breathing here was pretty solid at the beginning, but wasn't quite as good near the end of the piece. There was one breath that I heard quite easily and the breathing was just a lot shakier in spots where he didn't have as much time to breath. The intonation was mostly good, but I did notice that it started to slide a little bit in places where his voice had to move more quickly. The diction was for the most part fine, but there were some vowels (I think they were 'u' vowels) that were just a little bit too closed. I think that made the timbre of his voice a little covered especially in the lower register. If he opens up more that should fix that problem. In the beginning I thought that Luke did a good job conveying the meaning of this piece, but even so it improved a lot as a result of Dr. Glen's instructions. I really felt the emotion of the piece after that. Overall I think that Luke made some good improvements in expressiveness and in simply getting out of the way of his own voice.
Elizabeth Tait-Breathing on this piece is quite the challenge I think. The one thing that I would say about the breath is just that it was too audible. I think being more relaxed and having more open posture will help eliminate the breathiness. I thought she had good tone and a full, dark timbre that i really enjoyed. I thought she did a good job of expressing the mood of the piece with her mannerisms, but there were some components of her voice that weren't always consistent with the emotion of the piece. Sometimes it was just a little forced sounding, but I thought she did a good job adjusting that based on the instructions of Dr. Glen. The performance had a great sound and I thought it really showed Elizabeth's versatility.
