Mariah Master Class 9/24

Mariah Master Class 9/24
Emily Floyd
Emily had some nice balloon breathing and seemed very relaxed. Her timbre was melodious but not very fulsome. When she went up to her higher notes, it didn't sound very open or free. She had a calm, happy expression throughout the piece. During master class, Thomas and Emily worked on adding more dynamic into her singing. Thomas described the dynamic piano as a color more than a volume threshold. When Emily sang with this idea, her tone was so much richer and full. Thomas also emphasized constant vowels no matter which note you are singing. When Emily spoke the French words, her articulation was very good, but it was not carrying into her singing. After speaking through it, her diction became more clear while singing.

Sarah Boucher
Sarah had good intonation and a warm, feminine timbre. Her higher notes especially were very rich and full.  Thomas worked with Sarah to help her incorporate her breath a little more fluidly into her singing. He wanted to make sure she wasn't holding her breath before singing but preparing and going right into it. When she integrated her breaths, her timbre was richer. Thomas also had her say the words of the song while feeling the emotion and message of the song. Her singing became a lot more tender and expressive because of this.

Sarah Lowe
Sarah had a clear timbre and excellent intonation. The ornamentation was performed very accurately and she had full breathing throughout but I think she could add a little clearer diction. Thomas asked her to have fun with the song which helped her create an instantly more confident sound. He talked about giving the audience a little taste, then a little more and then really building in the phrase. This helps take the audience with you and build the momentum to the end of the phrase. Sarah got better at this the more she worked with it. By the end, she was able to really build the phrase in a connected way.
