Chapter Summary: Movement is something that is innate in all of us. Rhythm is in our daily lives: it is in our speech, breath, movement, etc... Music has the ability to move people. Because of that, it can have different effects on us, we can feel overwhelmed, underwhelmed, or completely uncomfortable. This is because music changes our natural processes. "Not only do we feel more alive when responding physically to music, we actually are. Our breathing is stimulated, as is our cardiovascular system and many other complex physiological processes."
By moving to the music we can find deeper meaning and are more able to conceptualize form and genre. Our purpose as performers is to evoke an emotion in our audience. This can only occur if the music has moved us first. Choreographing our pieces may be the first step to fully understanding, and uncovering the emotion within ourselves.
Key Terms:
Key Concepts: In order to move the listener, the performer must be first moved. Our bodies are much less critical than our minds.
Making Connections: I know that movement can often help me to think less, and perform better. It helps me get my head out of the game, and focus on trusting my body. But I am excited to try "choreographing" my pieces to see if it makes a difference in me. I would be extremely interested in using this as a vocalise method as well. Since our bodies are our instruments, shouldn't they be warmed up as well?
