I prepared for today's lesson by memorizing another Wolf piece, and really testing my sense of release and depth in my body during my daily practice routine.
I spoke to Brianna about the coaching I had with Dr. Thomas Glen, and told her the breakthrough I had. He had told me that I need to better familiarize my speaking voice with my singing voice. This really struck a chord with me, and so I wanted to discuss this with Brianna. I wanted to figure out how to do this without letting all the technique we've been working on for so long go out the window. She said that after practicing it for so long, it becomes habitual. My current ability will change and I won't have to think of it anymore. So we did some descending vocalises to practice the speech like place, and feeling of letting the pitch fall out. It was easy, and I found even a stronger connection to my speaking voice and my singing voice. My body was released, and with it, my voice just came. It felt really good to know that I found that place, and stayed there throughout the remainder of my warm-up. YAY!
When we started singing, I fell into the old trap of things. And realized there was no energy in my breath, and I was collapsing. This is my task to work on this next week: finding that speech like place not only in my vocalises, but my songs as well.
