Sam ER ch. 2 Summary

Sam
Chapter 2 Summary-Many performers struggle because of anxiousness brought on by the often unrealistic expectations of the people who may judge their performance. These judges can cause us to be tense when we perform and prevent us from performing to the best of our abilities and properly expressing the emotion and feeling of the music. So, we must decide to confront their judges by thinking about exactly who or what they are and why they make us so nervous. When we realize that the opinion of others matters far less than what we think of ourselves these judges will not only cease to be a stumbling block for us, but they will even become helpful. Obviously there is nothing wrong with constructive feedback that instructs and motivates, but when criticism from others becomes something that prevents us from being ourselves as performers we need to do something to keep those negative voices out of our heads.
Key Terms- Judges
Key Concept-All performers have 'judges' in their lives who if not confronted will prevent them from reaching their true potential. Performers can defeat their judges by acknowledging both their existence and the reason why they are able to make the performer anxious. When a performer realizes that those judges really probably just want what is best for them the nervousness will end.
Making Connections-As a result of this chapter I want to think harder about who my judges are and what about them is keeping me from being the singer that I want to be. I also want to perform more often so that I can get good practice at confronting and defeating those judges.
