Chapter 3 Summary-Music is something that should convey and inspire intense emotions. It is, therefore, very important that we as musicians are able to perform in a way that thoroughly and effectively conveys the emotion of the music. When we are interpreting music it is often the case that we can not do so simply through words. It is much easier to express the emotion of a piece of music and internalize its mood when we involve actual physical movement in the practice process. Good technique certainly has it's place but dancing to our music can help us forge a physical connection to the emotion that we desire for our music. When we truly let our music move us we perform it in a way that seems more fluid and natural. Some my think that they just aren't cut out for dancing because someone (possibly themselves) told them that was the case. This, however, is a false assumption because all of us regardless of age or talent for dancing can improve our performance when we move with our music.
Key Concept- Acting out the emotion and contour of a piece of music gives us more freedom in our performance. When we move to our music we can more readily understand the mood of the music as perform more effectively as a result.
Key Terms-Being moved
Making Connections-I think it would be very beneficial for me to move more to the music that I'm learning. I feel a lot like one of those people who paints themselves as not being a 'dancer' and therefore incapable of employing learning methods like this. I think using this tactic would bring some improvement to an area of my performing that needs it quite a bit.
