Luke Shepherd:

Luke had very good low breaths and didn't seem tense at all but, just as on Tuesday, his voice seems a little under energized. Arms were more relaxed than on Tuesday so that was good. I felt like his diction improved also. I feel like his voice is inside of him instead of coming out and showing itself to the world. Again, sometimes on ascending lines  he looks as though he is using his body and head to reach for the notes. Thomas helped Luke start to bring out a more energized and focused singing voice by having him speak the words. Thomas explained that Luke should think of his vowels more vertically than horizontally and that seemed to help. I think I'll use that myself. Luke's emotional connection to the piece was twenty times better when he compared it to a musical theater piece! Good job, Luke!

Elizabeth Tait:

Your breaths were a lot more gaspy than usual. I felt like Thomas said it best when he said you were using several vocal positions to "pocket" your voice into. I think this was because there are differences in the style of this piece from what you usually sing. Keeping the consistency of the breath is going to be key. I felt like you were trying to push the air sometimes. You have a bright, brilliant timbre and you really do well with the emotional aspects of the piece. I understood all of your words too. When you sang on the "O" vowel your breath was more consistent and your voice smoothed out and I didn't feel like you were pushing as much. Nice work!
