Ch. 6 Summary
Summary: Our ignition switch is either on or off. It can be triggered by certain signals or primal cues. In a test done on elementary school kids doing puzzles it was learned that praising a child for effort rather than success is what ignites them to take on harder challenges in the future. When you praise I child for being smart than the most important thing becomes looking smart. If you praise a child for effort however, then effort becomes the most important thing. We are continually looking around for signals of how we fit into a certain picture or situation so when we get a verbal response we take it very seriously.
Key Concepts: High motivational/ empty praise actually causes performance to decline. Reaffirming the struggle and praising for effort encourages the student to work harder.
Key Terms: The boing phenomenon
Making Connections: I'm going to have to work on reaffirming the struggle and praising for effort rather than praising for success. It is amazing what a difference it makes to performance. It is just goes to show, yet again, that error is where we learn and if everything were easy and we were always successful we would never grow.
