Jaron Putnam Lesson Summary 9/10/2013
Today's lesson helped me in two crucial ways. The two things that I need to work on most for this upcoming week have to do with Breathing, and accessing space "in my head" as I try to sing "higher" notes.
Breathing: The phrase from the lesson is: Think. Let. Think. Let. As I consciously breathe, I bucket breathe, and I am not preparing myself to sing the upcoming phrase. If I allow myself to THINK, and focus on creating space in my molars or in my head, or if I allow myself to just think about the upcoming phrase, my body will automatically help prepare itself to do those things. And my breath will be full, silent, and will help me to sing in such a better way.
Accessing space for high notes: We did an activity today that involved octave jumping. At first I felt myself forcing the jump and creating tightness in the vocal folds. We worked on allowing that jump to be natural and more importantly to help the tone created at the top to be easy and very nasally. Cindy described it as trying to place the sound not outside of my body, but just on the edge of my nose. Trying to create a clear open, QUIET, resonance on the high pitches. As we did this I came to understand this activity as a way to help strengthen my vocal muscles. I will only be able to do this successfully quiet at first, but if I can learn how to do it consistently at a quiet volume, then I will be able to increase the volume and power behind the tone and sound.
I am excited to work on these two things this week!
