Jared Daley SOHH Chapter 3
Summary-
I have never thought about actual movement being an answer until reading this chapter. So often we say that we are moved by something. In reality we are saying I am inspired to move by listening to this or watching this. Movement is a natural response. Fetus's move in the womb to music and the rhythm of life. Toddlers let out their passions hearing almost any kind of music. They naturally feel the beat. As adults we tend to repress that urge to move because of our self-consciousness. Guilty! Musicians can become so distant from their physical bodies. It makes a performance stiff or feel as though it's lacking something. It takes the drama of actual movement to reconnect us with our bodies. Movement can help us clarify musical responses and strengthen interpretation. There are so many exercises to help free up the movement within us. It's mostly just about ignoring those judges and just allowing our bodies to respond naturally to the music and sights around us.
Key Concept- There is such a dramatic difference between thinking a piece through the entire time you perform and feeling a piece while you perform. The second option is what makes a good performance great.
Connection- I know for a fact that i repress any movement i want to do, especially during a performance. I'm all think think think, and don't make any sudden movements. In reality I'm hindering myself.
