Emily F. VRH 9/12 group #2

Emily F. VRH 9/12 group #2
Brooke Myers: I felt like your body was leaning forward a lot, and maybe you were using strength from the front part of your body, instead of utilizing the back and hip muscles for support. The timbre was full and strong, with a somewhat fluttery vibrato. Because of how much you were pushing your air through your voice, I expected that there would be cracks in the sound between the lower voice and higher voice, but that didn't happen. I was surprised that the transitions were as smooth as they were, based on the forceful quality of the sound. You clearly have a lot of power in your voice, so don't feel like you have to push to get your sound out--just let it come. The intonation was sharp at the beginning of the song, probably because of nerves and extra energy, but improved over the song. I didn't understand the lyrics very well except for the words "all around", in which the L seemed to get in the way (retracted tongue?). You have a calm, confident attitude, which is great. Expression was pleasant, but I didn't feel much meaning in the lyrics.
Kimberly Robbins: I noticed that you were trying for looseness in the body, and you did pretty well from the chest down, but most of the tension seemed to be centered in the neck and shoulders. Feet were pretty close together--I don't know if that affected the amount of strength you could tap into. Intonation was good. Timbre is somewhat airy in the middle of your range, but clear with lovely ring in your high notes. Diction was clear and understandable, I think because you were really working on giving clear meaning to the words. I wanted to hear what you were going to say. Expression seemed to slip between thinking about the technical part of your singing and really feeling and emoting what you were singing. When you did feel and express, it was lovely, just needs to be more consistent.
Emily F.: I sang.
Umm. I didn't feel very confident, not having specifically prepared or warmed up, and I'm guessing that that showed. I tried for low breaths and recognized that most were higher in my chest than I wanted. I felt some shoulder tension, but I didn't know how to course-correct during the song. I have no idea what my timbre was like. I know my Italian is weak. I'm sure I didn't properly differentiate between single and double consonants, and I'm guessing my vowels could be brighter and purer.  I tried to remember to be expressive, and there are a couple of phrases that I love and can really get into, but a lot of the song I'm thinking about getting enough air and hitting the high notes.
