Emily F. ER ch. 1

Emily F. ER chapter 1 summary: We get ourselves wrapped up in our own and everyone else's expectations, hindering us from experiencing depth and creativity. For most of our lives, we hang onto the "shoulds" of perfection. Giving ourselves permission to be "open, flexible [with an] experimental state of mind," and "whole-heartedly participating" can help us find meaning in what we're doing, and give us some enjoyment along the way, too!
Key Concept: We need to let ourselves experience things in new ways, without fear of failure. This helps us have more joy and depth to our experiences.
Making Connections: I'm sure this chapter will speak to all of us. As a student with required hours to practice, required songs to learn, required courses to take, and deadlines for everything, I feel overwhelmed at times with the list of "shoulds" I have. It can be difficult to feel like I can let go of some expectations. I try to "make" my voice do what I want it to, often forgetting that it requires freedom and that it's a diva ("give it generous breath and vowel and it'll behave"--loved that from Thomas Grant Glenn!!!). I can be easily convinced into rigidity because of trying to do everything right with my voice, and obviously that backfires.
