Brooke M. TC Ch. 9 Summary

Brooke M. Ch. 9 Summary- To be a great teacher is not a born gift, it is a complex skill that combines many different qualities. These different qualities can be given the title "The Four Virtues". The first of which is The matrix. The matrix can be described a grid of knowledge that a person builds up over decades and years and is then able to recall it when needed. The second virtue is Perceptiveness. A teacher who listens to even the smallest detail or movement in body language or verbal language and can pick problems out will be great. The third virtue is the GPS Reflex. It is a way to give direction to a student that does not say "please" or "will" but "do" with the urgency you feel in the car while listening to your GPS. The fourth virtue is Theatrical Honesty, each of the amazing teachers or coaches we have followed in this book have some sort of "thing" they do. It could be there clothes, hair styles, the way they talk. It is something there is theirs and the best place to use it is on the errors of the student.

Key Concept- Good teachers/coaches observe and give specific small critiques that help the student.

Key Terms- matrix, perceptiveness, GPS reflex, theatrical honesty.

Connections- As college students in the music program we a lot of times are teachers to ourselves. I then can  take the four virtues and use them. Although my own matrix is not as big as others it is there and I can call upon it and also make it grow with the help of my various teachers. Instead of just singing through a piece I should be actively looking for even the smallest mistake and fix it.
