Chapter Summary: An important part to igniting the motivation to obtain a certain skill is a guide who can help fire the right circuits. A master coach is one who has the ability to inspire an individual to achieve greatness not through long-winded speeches or commanding eloquence. Instead, a master coach is one who has them self gained a vast knowledge in the skill that they teach, offer small and targeted feedback for specific adjustments, are extremely sensitive to the people they teach, and customize each message to the student's personality. Through the example of the cello teacher, Han Jensen, we learn that a master coach does not merely tell the student what to do, but he becomes what they should do himself, communicating the goal with gesture, tone, rhythm, and gaze. Nothing he does is on accident and are meant to accurately target signals. A legendary basketball coach, John Wooden, also exhibits attributes of a master coach through his teaching mode: model the right way to do something, show the incorrect way, and then model the right way again. Prior meticulous planning also enabled his team's practices to be growing and changing experiences. Each master coach described in the chapter has many of the same qualities, no matter how renown they may be or not. One important commonality that they have is the ability to coach a person into loving the skill in which they are learning. They succeed because they are mirrors of deep practice and ignition themselves, and through them inspire passion into their students.
Key Concept: A master coach understands that we should "not look for the big, quick improvement. Instead, seek small improvements one day at a time. That's the only way it happens - and when it happens, it lasts."
Key Terms - Master coach, talent whisperer, repetition, automaticity, ignition
Making Connections: In my life, I have had the opportunity, and will continue to have the opportunity to be a teacher and a coach to many people. As I strive to develop the attributes described by the master coaches in this chapter, my effectiveness as a teacher will increase dramatically, as well as a love for my students and what I do.
