Sam ER ch. 4 Summary

Sam
Chapter 4 Summary-Our attitude toward practice as musicians is of great importance. When our practice is monotonous, boring, and pessimistic it is very difficult to maintain the proper expressiveness in our music as well as proper technique. When we practice this way it seems that in spite of the long hours we log in the practice room we are not actually improving. To avoid this kind of practice we need to focus on simply having a high level of awareness rather than a high level of judgement when we make mistakes. It is much better if we just try something and become aware of the result rather than immediately trying to correct it. This is useful because much of the time the key to fixing a mistake isn't simply repeating the trouble spots a thousand times. It can be helpful to simply concentrate on the shape of the musical phrase, on the feeling of the music, and on the emotion of the piece. Dancing can also be helpful in this case.
Key Concept: We can't allow our practice to be frustrating. Obviously errors need to be acknowledged, but we need to maintain optimism and be creative when fixing them. We should, for example, also acknowledge our progress and success. Sensory imagery can help us greatly in this process.
Key Terms-Awareness
Making Connections-I need to make my practice a little more creative. I think I need to be a little more creative about how I fix the mistakes that I make. I have definitely had practice session where I feel like all I do is repeat the same thing over and over again without much progress. I'm going to try concentrating a little more on the shape of my music.
