Mariah VRH 9/12
Hannah Lovato
Hannah had a feminine, resonant timbre and balloon breathing. Her lower notes were a bit weaker than her higher range. She could work on having a more full sound in her lower range. She had a pleasant expression of the song but could relax more at the end. She seemed a little uncomfortable while the piano finished off the song. She also could use a little stronger diction. It was a very nice performance, but I feel like it could be more powerful, possibly by adding more dynamics to the song.
Jaron Putnam
Jaron had a very rich, warm sound in his lower range, but tended to have a less resonant timbre in his higher range. One specific moment, when he sang a high note on the vowel sound "oo," he sounded constricted and tense. Jaron had very clear diction, but his "sh" sounds tended to be a lot more emphasized than the other consonants. This made the "sh" consonants feel a little out of place and not match the rest of the diction. Jaron was in tune and had nice balloon breathing. He had fairly good expression but only had one focal point, straight ahead, through the song. It may benefit his expression to find different focal points to help add meaning.
LaeKin Burgess
LaeKin had a fluttering, feminine timbre and was in tune except for a few higher notes where her sound was slightly wavering . Her breathing was not quite as full as I think she could do. Her expression was fine but she, like Jaron, only looked straight ahead. She tended to jump into the song after the interlude as if it caught her off guard. Her higher notes felt constricted and I think she could add more dynamics to the piece. Her timbre, though, has improved a lot since master class on Tuesday.
