Mariah Master Class 9/17
Sam Meredith
Sam seemed relaxed while performing and had good intonation throughout. When he introduced his name and song, his voice seemed to fade away at the end and his diction wasn't clear. His breathing seemed a little bucket-like, possibly because his posture wasn't as upright and open as he could have it. The timbre of his voice was rich but seemed a little too far back in his throat. It was a little nasally on some words, specifically the "sneh" and "mu" sounds. During master class, Cindy had Sam add movement while singing to help internalize the musical shape. They worked on adding momentum so that the "roller coaster could make it to the top of the track." Sam did well, but I think he could let go more and have freer movements that connect with the expression of the song. Sam also worked on opening up his chest to help his posture. This helped him create a fuller, more confident sound.
Luke Shepherd
Luke had good intonation and balloon breathing. His timbre was smooth but went a bit nasally on the word "penne" specifically. His overall sound was a little quiet and he could go further to make a stronger, more rich sound. His expression was good, but I feel like he could really connect with the song more and go further with the expression. He had a few nervous movements during his performance: tapping his legs with his hands and sticking his tongue out. During master class, Cindy would pull his arms back while he tried to get away to help open up his chest. This helped him to engage his whole body and create linear tension. This helped him to improve a lot and helped create a much fuller sound. Luke also worked on making the phrases go somewhere and maintaining energy throughout the whole phrase instead of only the higher notes.
