I thought my lesson went well. I felt prepared because I had warmed up before coming. I also had practiced the rhythm, melody and pronunciation of "Traume" throughout the week, so I felt I knew it well and could work on it. I had never sung it with the accompaniment before coming to my lesson, though, so when I sang it to her playing, I realized I didn't know it quite as well as I thought.
During this week's lesson, I learned some new vocalizes and how to apply a few to work on reaching the higher notes in "Traume." I sang through "Traume" on an "ah" sound with the accompaniment and worked on holding my jaw down and back, especially for the higher range. We picked some other songs for me to work on: "Clair de Lune" by Gabriel Faure and "Music for a While" by Henry Purcell. And lastly we picked dates for when I need to have the song analysis forms done for my songs.
The key things I learned in this lesson were the vocalizes to help me sing high in "Traume". I had been struggling all week with the higher sections, but when I worked on holding my jaw back and singing the higher sections on a lip trill, I was able to sing those high notes a lot more freely. Also, I learned that I tend to lock my knees while singing. I need to remember to keep them a little bent and stay relaxed. I need to continue to work on releasing my jaw and creating more space in my mouth, especially on "ee" sounds.
My main goal for my next lesson is to be able to sing the higher notes in "Traume" more freely without the vocalizes. I want to practice it with the lip trill or holding my jaw back as much as I need to until I can apply those feelings to my singing. Also, I want to have "Traume" memorized, so I can focus more on working the sound instead of fumbling over the words. I need to finish the song analysis form for "Clair de Lune" by my next lesson and have the melody and rhythm learned.
