Luke Shepherd SOHH Chapter 3

Chapter Summary: We use the expression of being moved by a piece of art or music or theater, but what do we mean by it? Being moved is so much more than enjoying or not enjoying something. It's not a scholarly understanding but a very real emotional and physical response to a certain stimuli. There are pieces of music that move us, cause us to feel strong emotions, cause a chemical change within us, and can even elicit literal physical movement and response. By being aware of our bodies and how a piece of music can 'move' us we can experiment with feeling and performing that way, in a way that elicits emotion and feeling from the audience.

Key Concept: Before the music can ever move the listener it must first move the mover, the performer.

Key Terms:

Making Connections: I feel slightly vindicated with my dancing exercises while learning my repertoire. I can still go a long way as far as being free and willing to move and to feel the music I'm learning. There is so much more that goes into a piece of music than learning the phrasing, notes, rhythms, and text...
