Luke Shepherd SOHH Chapter 1

Chapter Summary: We are own worst enemies. Our own mental barriers of who we are and how we should be can get in the way of freedom and spontaneity that can help us experiment and really find where we yet need to go with our craft. Our efforts for perfection and mastery in our skill can lead to great stumbling blocks and stifle our creativity and progress. We think about what our bodies 'should' be doing and we try to micromanage the biomechanics and in doing so we make it harder for ourselves. We need to have an open mind to experiment.

Key Concept: There is no cure-all or panacea to good singing technique. There is only an open mind and freedom that will lead you to the next hurdle.

Key Terms: "Should"

Making Connections: I feel silly sometimes when I bounce around to try and give myself an energetic sensation or when I dance to the contour of my repertoire in the practice room, but how else am I going to distract myself enough to get myself out of my own way!?
