Jared Daley VRH Critiques 9.12.13

Sam Meredith-
I thought his breathing was actually pretty good. My reasoning is that I didn't notice it at all. I didn't see chest inflate, or shoulders rise. There weren't any major visual cues that his breath wasn't helping him.
The piece was in tune. His lower notes had a warm rich tone. Higher notes weren't as rich or full.  Very pure tone throughout. O vowels seemed to be more swallowed than the others. Diction was decent. I could hear most words. There was a lot of expression, it was a lot of sad expression. I think the sadness he was displayed cause him to droop his shoulders a bit. If it wasn't a sad song then he needs to work on expression and make sure his body is grounded.

Sara Low-
Her chest and shoulders rose up on every breath. Definitely bucket breathing. This song calls for strong breath support. The song was in tune as far as i could tell. Very tight upper register, it needed more support. I'm guessing better breathing habits could help a lot. I'm not sure about the diction because I know the words very well so I thought that they were clear and understandable. I also know what words i was looking for so this isn't very helpful sorry. Great expression, I could tell she knew what the song was about. very engaging facial expressions. Overall the performance was decent. It's a big song for anyone to sing, needs to ground her body and breath lower for the support she needs to sing that song.

Laura Berg-
Breath was pretty good. It was better than the last time I had to critique her, so i could tell she was aware of her breathing. It was in tune. her tone has a darker quality, sounds a little heavy. I loved her "oo" vowels they were very pingy and clear. Diction was clear. I could understand most of the German. Body was a little stiff especially in the arms. They were held into place. Her face seemed relaxed, but her body seemed rigid. Needs a nice relaxed posture. Overall it was a beautiful clear performance aurally, but visually it was stiff.
