Emily F. TC ch. 10

Emily F. TC ch. 10 summary: Master coaches do lots of different things. First of all, they love what they do, and they build a connection with their students. Having that human connection helps in the ignition process. They also teach in a way that is right for each student. Using different methods of describing something helps the student use more senses to understand a concept. Tom Martinez used four different ways to describe a play: tactile, personification, image, and physical.
Key Concept: Having a connection with your student allows you to understand the best way to teach them.
Key Terms: human connection, tactile, personification, image, physical
Making Connections: Using different ways of describing a concept is particularly apt in teaching singing. All of the choir directors that I have worked with have been great at giving analogies for the sound they want, which I promptly write in my music. Having images in mind while singing is incredibly effective at getting the desired sound. In private voice instruction, we get lots of images about what our bodies are doing. Directing biomechanics doesn't do a lot of good, but images help us to get our bodies doing what we want.
