Emily F. masterclass 9/10
Hannah Lovato: I didn't notice breathing because I was distracted by extraneous body movement (I promise I wrote that down before you said it, Cindy!). Your weight seemed to be balanced on one leg, didn't feel like a very strong position for getting low breaths. Intonation was good. Timbre was clear and brilliant with good ring and spin in upper notes, less so in lower voice. Could use more consonants on German, and it didn't feel like you were too secure in the words yet. I have to speak my lyrics many times before I feel comfortable singing them. The help with molar separation definitely improved the sound of the lower pitches. I find that even though I am more comfortable singing in my lower voice, I don't use much molar space when I sing the low notes either. I think of them as "easy", which probably contributes to my lack of energy and sagging pitch. This is a good reminder.
Taylee Beckstead: I noticed at first that the lower body seemed under-energized. I could tell that you were thinking about balloon breathing, and were successful some of the time, but because of the upper body tension, you weren't able to use those breaths to the full potential. I know the piece and know that it is scary, and I could read that in your body and face. Between phrases I could tell that you were thinking about the meaning and going for a calm expression but every time you started to sing, your eyebrows went up and the tension kicked in. Diction had great rounded lips for the right syllables, sounded accurate. Swinging gorilla arms and upper body looseness added real strength to the sound--not volume, but more spin, brighter timbre. It was improved.
LaeKin Burgess: Breath seemed pushed out in the beginning, not released. Intonation was good-- on top of the pitch, but the sound was tight. Diction sounded good. I always enjoy your voice in German. The first time I noticed a nice released, full sound was on the words, "da komtes mir" (something like that) and it was a rich, round, clear sound. Expression seemed appropriately sad or anxious, but the overall tension kind of took away from the feeling. Working on releasing that tension definitely improved the sound.
