Elizabeth Tait Lesson #2 Summary

This lesson taught me the lesson of balancing simultaneous extremities.  I have been learning this the whole time I've been here, but each lesson it become more clear.  This lesson focused specifically on the balance between the low, relaxed "uuuhhhhh" feeling, and my pingy, resonant "nnngggg" feeling.  I'm achieving both to a certain degree of success, but it's time to move to an even greater level!  I want to list a couple of methods we used to try and achieve that simultaneity:
  •  prolonging a [x] gutteral sound to and not readjusting afterwards
  • alternating that [x] sound with "nnnnggg" high in pitch, and then singing
  • blowing boogers (we all know that trick)
  • pretend to drink a hot drink (opens up a relaxed throat)
  • voicelessly chant "ha ha hee hee" over and over without changing the jaw
All of these exercises, and even more, were helpful to get that feeling of simultaneity.  Another balancing act I felt we worked on was between line and bounce.  You want a sense of connected line in the voice, but also a buoyancy in the voice.  I'm going to focus on that this week as well.  Each note is a new note, but the voice stays the same.

Error detection:  when I feel that my voice is rattle-y, something is wrong!   If it doesn't feel easy like it did in this lesson, something is wrong!  But it's a process, and so just get in the practice room and play around!
