Caitlin Craig TC Chapter 10 Summary

Chapter Summary: As a master coach or teacher we must find ways that we can connect with our students on a higher level.  Instruction cannot be effective if there isn't a mutual trust and respect between teacher and student (as depicted in earlier chapters with Miss Mary).  To truly reach students, you must figure out first their values, background, and learning styles/capabilities.  As with Martinez, he made a quick snap judgement, and used humor to establish trust and respect between himself and Russell.  With time, he was able to cater and refine his instruction by learning more about the player in the uniform: he discovered his moral code, background, role models, weaknesses, and strengths.  Through careful observation, and sensitivity to his students' thinking and learning processes, Martinez has been able to yield successful football players like Tom Brady, and Russel alike.
Key Terms: Forge a connection.
Key Concepts: Truly effective Teachers forge a connection with their students to establish trust and respect.  This connection is vital to the Teacher's ability to analyze how their students tick.  Master coaches and teachers should love what they do.  Their passion for what they do shows, and students can perceive it.  Students need mentoring and consistency.
Making Connections: I want to be able to establish a trustworthy and respectful relationship with my future students so I may be able to better cater to their learning needs.  This will also help with ignition, because students who love their teachers want to come back to their lessons each week, they want to put effort into their practice, and in return they gain skill.  I will need to use my intuition and matrix of knowledge to figure out my students' learning styles, so that my teaching may be effective.
