Caitlin Craig SOHH Chapter 1

Chapter Summary: As performers, we often get stuck on the voice inside our head.  We are our biggest critics, and when we give this voice power it is detrimental to our growth and learning.  This voice inhibits an open environment where we can have an open mind,  experiment, and not be afraid to fail.   Liz, the singer, was hung up on her faults.  As a teacher the voice inside the head can be just as detrimental, and discouraging.  The voice inside our head can tell us lies, and when you set that mental cap on your ability, it destroys the nourishing-open-minded-environment which learning is dependent on.  Singing is often a mental mind game.  As the author states, "we insert the judges between ourselves and our experience, which is like making love with our clothes on, missing the skin-to-skin, body-to-body immediacy of full contact..." When we let go of the expectations, fear, and preconceived notions of what we can and cannot do, that's when the miracle of learning occurs.
Key Terms: Conditioning, open environment,
Key Concepts: Let go of your internal judges/fears, create an environment which is safe to fail in and to experiment.
Making Connections: This chapter is me to a "T".  Singing is always a mind game for me, and I feel like once I let go of these internal judges, and stop thinking about it so much, it always falls into the right place.  I need to work on thinking less, and feeling more, while still maintaining that safe and open environment.
